Accelerating Expertise Development
Voyager is building a platform that dramatically accelerates the development of expertise through cutting-edge cognitive science and a special type of thought called "metacognition" or "thinking about your thoughts". We believe that by rethinking how knowledge is structured and presented, we can transform education and make deep understanding accessible to all students.
Philosophical Background
In the 17th century, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz envisioned a calculus ratiocinator—a universal method of reasoning that could reduce complex arguments to calculations, so that if two people disagreed about something, all they'd have to do would be to turn a handle a couple of times to get the answer.
While we're not building this exact system, we are inspired by the ambition to make reasoning more structured, transparent, and accessible. Modern schooling was never intended to do this, as the philosophy of education was shaped by the Enlightenment idea that knowledge is something to be delivered rather than discovered. Schools became factories for transmitting facts, not workshops for building thinking skills. Students learned to absorb information, not to reason through problems or show their work in ways others could follow and verify.
Elite education has always focused on developing cognitive abilities, not just transmitting information. While most students memorized content, the privileged learned techniques like the art of memory—using mental imagery to dramatically expand their recall capacity. In imperial China, future leaders mastered dialectical reasoning through structured analysis, learning to break down complex problems and build rigorous arguments. These weren't mere academic exercises but practical tools for enhancing intellectual performance. Such methods have existed for centuries, available only to a select few. Today, we're working to democratize these powerful learning technologies and make them accessible to everyone.
Education's Evolution
From standardized schooling to personalized cognitive acceleration
The Industrial Model
When Horace Mann established the American public high school system in the 19th century, it was designed to produce standardized citizens for an industrial age. This one-size-fits-all model continues to dominate today, despite our growing understanding of cognitive diversity.
The Crisis Today
The post-pandemic educational landscape reveals a broken system. Many students are performing 2-3 grade levels below others in their class, with decreasing literacy rates and mathematical proficiency. The need for radical pedagogical innovation has never been more apparent.
The Structure of Understanding
What if there was a universal rational way of coming to understanding about a topic?
Every field of expertise is built upon ontological structures—networks of concepts, principles, and relations that experts navigate effortlessly but students struggle to perceive. By mapping these structures and making them explicit, we can dramatically accelerate the journey from novice to expert.
Jargon-loaded terminology becomes meaningful when placed within these knowledge structures. Abstract concepts become concrete when properly situated in relation to empirical phenomena and lived experience.

The Ontology: A Digital Twin of Knowledge
At the heart of Voyager is our groundbreaking "ontology" - an interactive digital twin of the knowledge involved in each subject. Rather than focusing on vocabulary and language, we center the actual phenomena that make up disciplines like chemistry, physics, social studies, and mathematics.
This revolutionary approach makes complex subjects accessible to everyone by creating direct connections to concepts, allowing students to develop deep understanding regardless of language or learning differences.
Unified Curricular Platform
Voyager integrates curriculum, assessment, and individualized education plans into a single cohesive platform, breaking down the silos that traditionally separate these crucial components of education.
Seamless Integration
Connect IEPs directly to curriculum content and learning activities
Actionable Insights
Convert specialist recommendations into specific teaching strategies
Real-time Adaptation
Adjust learning pathways based on continuous assessment data
Phenomenon-Centered Learning
We revolutionize education by centering actual phenomena rather than abstract language. In chemistry, students interact with molecular behavior; in social studies, they explore societal dynamics; in mathematics, they manipulate relationships between quantities.
Comprehensive Student Visibility
Voyager provides unprecedented visibility into each student's cognitive life, integrating academic, social-emotional, and behavioral data into a holistic picture that empowers educators.

The Structure of Expertise
Ontological Understanding
Our approach builds rich ontologies of subject matter that reveal the deep structure underlying expert understanding. These knowledge maps transform how students relate to complex domains.
- Maps concepts to empirical phenomena
- Illuminates hidden relationships between ideas
- Integrates multiple perspectives on complex topics
- Highlights cross-cutting principles that organize knowledge
Accelerating Expertise
What is expertise, really? We believe it's the internalization of meaningful patterns that allow for rapid, intuitive understanding. Our platform accelerates this process through deliberate cognitive scaffolding.
- Identifies the structural patterns that experts recognize intuitively
- Makes tacit knowledge explicit and teachable
- Creates personalized learning paths based on cognitive strengths
- Develops fluency through strategic practice and feedback
The Revolution in Learning
We believe all students can become proficient in many aspects of a subject quickly. By rethinking the very structure of knowledge and how it's presented, we can create educational environments where standard learning objectives are satisfied early in a term, freeing students to sharpen their unique abilities and explore creative applications of knowledge.
